Each village hall will have its own fire procedure, and this should always be read and understood before running a session there. Staff and volunteers should make themselves familiar with the fire exits, evacuation routes, assembly point, alarm points, and any specific instructions displayed in the hall. Do not assume that every venue works in the same way.
In the event of a fire, the priority is to move people away from danger as calmly and safely as possible. When supporting people living with dementia, use clear, simple instructions and reassurance. Avoid panic, rushing, or raising your voice unless there is immediate danger. Some people may be confused, reluctant to leave, or unsure of what is happening, so staff should guide them gently, using familiar names where possible and offering physical support only where appropriate.
Common sense should always be applied. Do not stop to collect belongings, do not use lifts unless the venue procedure specifically says it is safe to do so, and do not re-enter the building once outside. If someone is at immediate risk, move them to the nearest safe exit or place of safety and alert the emergency services or fire marshal as soon as possible. Staff should work together, communicate clearly, and make sure everyone is accounted for at the assembly point.
