Self-employed Group Leader Role

Group Leaders must: 

  • Be registered as self-employed with HMRC and be able to provide a UTR (Unique Taxpayer Reference) number.
  • Have public liability insurance.  
  • Be able to produce an invoice for the hours worked based upon an agreed hourly rate

Support can be given if needed, with setting up these procedures.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Plan a programme of activities prior to each session and communicate this to the Director/ line manager.
  • Organise equipment/materials for activities - with support from the Director/ line manager.
  • Be familiar with group members profiles/backgrounds provided by family members on the website form.
  • Be aware of different levels of cognitive ability and the way in which dementia can impact on different parts of the brain, creating cognitive weakness e.g. difficulties in processing auditory or visual information as well as with executive functioning (that part of the brain which enables us to plan a series of related actions).
  • Activities should be as far as possible person centred, based upon individual cognitive strengths as well as interests.
  • Evaluate the success or otherwise of an activity and try to adapt for future use.
  • When family members/friends transport members to groups, try to spend a few minutes with them in order to build up relationships as this will help support members if there are difficulties, not only in the group but also at home. Always focus on giving positive feedback as to how the session has gone. 
  • Understand and abide by all Dementia Active’s policies 
  • Guide and monitor volunteers, (as defined in the volunteer information section on the website), supporting them in learning about the individual needs of members.
  • Record session notes - a brief summary of each members responses to activities. (via online form).
  • Work closely with the Director of Dementia Active and communicate between sessions, for example - give feedback on progress with the group/planning new activities/seek support with difficulties as they arise. Dementia Active does not want group leaders to feel they are working alone.
  • Develop activities which are in line with the principles and practice of Cognitive Stimulation Therapy as devised by the team at the University College London (UCL) led by Aimee Spector.   • Support the development of the company as it seeks to explore the practice of Cognitive Stimulation Techniques which will in the future become increasingly used, alongside Social Prescribing as a way of helping to maintain people with dementia in their own homes.
  • To communicate regarding availability and to give as much notice as possible if unable to attend a session. 
  • To communicate positively about the organisation in the wider community.
  • To be inclusive and without value judgement when responding to people who may have very different backgrounds, beliefs or cultures.
  • Report  immediately to the Director of Dementia Active any safeguarding concerns, accidents or any other health and safety issues. 
  • To find out about and make use of (in consultation with the Director of Dementia Active) any local resources which might supplement the activities provided, for instance nature reserves, cafes, places of historic interest. 
  • Assist members with personal care needs if required. 
  • To respect members rights to confidentiality at all times.
  • Be willing on occasion to transport members to sessions.

This list of duties and responsibilities is not exhaustive and the role may require other tasks which might reasonably be expected, to be carried out.

Person specification:

Qualities

Organised, reliable, enthusiastic, caring, committed to the welfare of people with dementia, willing to learn, sense of fun, observant.

Skills

  • Effective written/verbal communication skills.
  • Able to use online modes of communication.
  • Ability to engage with older people who have dementia and who may have a wide range of needs and abilities.
  • Ability to organise activities, record and evaluate outcomes.
  • Ability to work independently
  • The ability to motivate and encourage members who might not want to participate.
  • The ability to offer warmth and friendliness in relationships with members but at the same time maintain clear personal boundaries. 

Knowledge/Experience

  • Have a general understanding of different forms of dementia or willingness to undertake a basic online dementia course.
  • Have an awareness of the significance of maintaining clear boundaries when working with members.
  • Be willing to learn about Cognitive Stimulation Therapy.
  • Be willing to attend any 1 day courses which may be necessary in order to maintain high standards of performance within the company, e.g. Safeguarding - Oxfordshire Safeguarding Adults Board.
  • Have experience of working with and supporting volunteers.
  • Be willing to sign up to be a Dementia Friend.
  • Knowledge and experience of good Health and safety practice:
  • Knowledge of the building and potential risks to members 
  •  Fire safety
  •  First Aid
  • Making risk assessments
  • Management of activity equipment e.g. scissors
  • Risks to staff for instance through moving and handling e.g. furniture;   
  •  Correctly assisting members to sit/stand; awareness of potential for aggressive behaviour from members.
